Listen to Daphne Talk About the Challenges of Her Work
I met Daphne German while reporting for WBHM on the Hemley Road Church of Christ Food Panty in Bayou la Batre, AL.
(To hear the story on WBHM's site, click here.)
Daphne commuted to the town after hurricanes Katrina and Ivan to volunteer, because the fishing village's economy was so drastically affected. She evenutally moved there full-time, co-founded the church, and started the food pantry.
After the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf, the community's food needs increased exponentially.
Today, the program feeds 250-300 families every couple of weeks.
